NGEST – Supply and Installation of Plant and Equipment, North Gaza WWTP (JV Stulz Planaqua / MACC)

The North Gaza Emergency Sewage Treatment (NGEST) project (World Bank P074595) built a new wastewater treatment plant for Jabalia, Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun, with an ultimate capacity of 35,600 m³/day: activated sludge with nitrogen removal, sludge thickening, two 4,800 m³ anaerobic digesters, centrifuge dewatering and biogas energy recovery covering about 60% of the plant's power demand, discharging to nine infiltration basins of up to 8 ha that recharge the aquifer.

Under the original plant-and-equipment contract (signed May 2010, EUR 10.4 million plus US$25.3 million, funded by the World Bank and other donors) MACC was the local partner (40%) of Stulz Planaqua (Germany) and carried out the civil works. About 95% of the plant had been built when the contract was terminated in 2014 following the bankruptcy of the lead partner; the plant was then completed by a joint venture led by Termomeccanica Ecologia with MACC as member.
